Hey guys, so I been doing timed random blocks all week and every single time how prelim / transitional year (TY) rank lists work alongside advanced specialties shows up I freeze up. Specifically building a separate supplemental rank order list of prelim IM, prelim surgery, or transitional year programs linked under each advanced (PGY-2) program on your primary NRMP list vs ranking geographic-matching prelim/TY programs under each advanced program so you do not have to move across the country between PGY-1 and PGY-2 always gets me when I only have 60 seconds left on the clock.
In my head I keep falling for forgetting to attach and certify the supplemental PGY-1 rank list for each advanced PGY-2 program in the NRMP R3 system. What clue in the vignette makes you jump straight to the right answer w/o overthinking?
Context: currently during sub-I night float downtime squeezing in 15 qs between pages.

Been there man, how prelim / transitional year (TY) rank lists work alongside advanced specialties used to wreck my timing too until I simplified it. The biggest thing is also listing standalone prelim/TY programs at the very bottom of your primary list if you want to guarantee a PGY-1 spot. Once you lock onto building a separate supplemental rank order list of prelim IM, prelim surgery, or transitional year programs linked under each advanced (PGY-2) program on your primary NRMP list first and then check ranking geographic-matching prelim/TY programs under each advanced program so you do not have to move across the country between PGY-1 and PGY-2, you automatically rule out 3 of the 5 choices in like 15 seconds.
Also watch out for forgetting to attach and certify the supplemental PGY-1 rank list for each advanced PGY-2 program in the NRMP R3 system — test writers love throwing that in when you are during sub-I night float downtime squeezing in 15 qs between pages. If you just circle the vitals/labs and ask yourself whether building a separate supplemental rank order list of prelim IM, prelim surgery, or transitional year programs linked under each advanced (PGY-2) program on your primary NRMP list is the primary driver, you will stop falling for the distractor.
